I was given the a task to explore an assistive technology module website (http://www.atinternetmodules.org/). This website is phenomenal! The website, Assistive Technology Internet Modules, showcases several modules including what considerations for assistive technology look like, what the implementation and pre-assessment/assessment look like, and other knowledgeable modules about more specific assistive technology software, such as ASR, also known as Automatic Speech Recognition.
Below is an image of the ATIM homepage after signing in. By the way, it's free to sign up!
At first, the the module navigator can be slightly overwhelming. But after playing around with the website for a few minutes you become easily acclimated. The modules can be lengthy, and if you want to gain the most from them it benefits to have due diligence. Modules range from 15-40 slides, and they contain video clips, helpful links, summaries, and downloadable PDF resources that you can save for your use in IEP meetings.
It pays to explore the "Browse Alphabetically" section of the Module Navigator if you are searching for a more specific Assistive Tech element or area, such as Automatic Speech Recognition.
I partook in the following three modules, "AT Assessment Process", "AT Consideration in the IEP Process", and "Automatic Speech Recognition". The modules each took a little over an hour to complete. You need to carve out diligent time to these resources if you want the most from them.
During the AT Assessment Process in a School Environment I found several wonderful resources in regards to the SETT Framework, which breaks down AT by Student, Environment, Task and Tools (Zablada). Below is an image from this module that further explains this research proven method on the effective approach to implementing AT in the school environment.
The I found the AT Considerations during the IEP Process Module the most helpful and pertinent to a new special education teacher entering the field. One can feel overwhelmed and helpless with the abundance of elements we need to deal with in this profession. This module truly broke down what it means to be apart of an IEP team, whether you are the regular education teacher or special education teacher. Additionally, the module provided things you can use and download right to your desktop. Below is an image of a few extremely helpful documents you would be able to obtain from the Assistive Technology Internet Module Website. Enjoy!
